This album is really goddamn great. Siul Hughes is definitely one of the most exciting discoveries I’ve made this year. I’m glad I finally got around to checking this album out before the year ended.

Now five albums deep into a career in music, solo artist Siul Hughes’ latest resonates as an artist comfortable in their direction, creating a separation from the influences that formerly leaned close over his shoulder.

“Someone once told me I should write all my dreams but I don’t see the point / rather live and learn and light a joint,” Siul Hughes begins on “Still Doubting,” the opening cut from Hueman, Hughes’s fifth and latest album, but first with New Haven’s own Fake Four, Inc. .”

Siul Hughes is an artist from Connecticut that has been releasing music for about the last seven years. Now Hughes gets to make his official debut on Fake Four with his latest album, HUEMAN.

Siul Hughes stands in the woods in East Rock Park. The green around him is as lush as can be. He’s a shadow by contrast, his sunglasses and teeth flashing from beneath a baseball cap.

The tone for the night was set by opening act Siul Hughes, a local artist who has been traveling recently but is back in “the 203” for a spell.

At the end of “Melodramatic,” the opening cut to the album of the same name, New Haven MC Siul Hughes lays back on a bed of tango-inflected strings that seem to weep for the modern society Hughes describes, in which technology is pushing us ever further apart from each other.
